Advanced Topic 50 of 52 Data Structures

Merkle Trees

Hash trees enabling efficient integrity verification.

How it works

A Merkle tree hashes each leaf block, then hashes pairs of hashes up to a single root. Any change alters the root, and a proof of membership needs only O(log n) hashes.

Where it is used

Git, Bitcoin, certificate transparency, distributed file sync.

Common pitfall

Needs a secure hash function; order and duplicate handling must be specified.

Where it fits in the course

Merkle Trees is topic 50 of 52 in Data Structures, rated Advanced. It follows HyperLogLog. The next topic is Rope Data Structure.

How to study this topic

  1. Read the explanation above and restate the definition in your own words.
  2. Open the interactive lesson and answer its mini quiz.
  3. Read the common pitfall, then write a short example that avoids it.
  4. Check your understanding in the Data Structures quiz, and revisit the topic if you miss a question.
