Advanced Topic 49 of 52 Data Structures

HyperLogLog

Probabilistic counter estimating distinct elements.

How it works

HyperLogLog hashes items and tracks the maximum number of leading zeros seen in each of many registers; combining them estimates the number of distinct items with about 1–2% error in kilobytes of memory.

Where it is used

Unique visitor counts in Redis, BigQuery approximations.

Common pitfall

Gives estimates, not exact counts, and is poor for small cardinalities without corrections.

Where it fits in the course

HyperLogLog is topic 49 of 52 in Data Structures, rated Advanced. It follows Count-Min Sketch. The next topic is Merkle Trees.
