Advanced Topic 48 of 52 Data Structures

Count-Min Sketch

Probabilistic frequency estimator using little memory.

How it works

A small 2D array of counters indexed by several hashes; adding an item increments one counter per row and the estimate is the minimum across rows, which never underestimates.

Where it is used

Streaming frequency counts, heavy hitters in network traffic.

Common pitfall

Overestimates when collisions are heavy; size depends on the error and confidence targets.

Where it fits in the course

Count-Min Sketch is topic 48 of 52 in Data Structures, rated Advanced. It follows Cuckoo Hashing. The next topic is HyperLogLog.
