Intermediate Topic 24 of 50 Computer Networks

Sliding Window Protocol

Allowing multiple outstanding unacknowledged packets.

How it works

The sender may have up to a window of unacknowledged packets in flight, sliding forward as ACKs arrive; Go-Back-N resends all after a loss, Selective Repeat resends only missing ones.

Where it is used

Maintaining throughput on long-delay links.

Common pitfall

The window must be at least bandwidth × delay to fill a pipe.

Where it fits in the course

Sliding Window Protocol is topic 24 of 50 in Computer Networks, rated Intermediate. It follows Congestion Control. The next topic is Error Detection and Correction.
