Intermediate Topic 23 of 50 Computer Networks

Congestion Control

Adapting send rate to avoid overloading the network.

How it works

TCP infers congestion from loss or delay and adjusts its congestion window: slow start doubles per RTT, then congestion avoidance grows linearly; loss halves it (AIMD). Variants: Reno, CUBIC, BBR.

Where it is used

Keeping the Internet stable.

Common pitfall

Wireless loss is mistaken for congestion by loss-based algorithms.

Where it fits in the course

Congestion Control is topic 23 of 50 in Computer Networks, rated Intermediate. It follows Flow Control. The next topic is Sliding Window Protocol.
