Beginner Topic 9 of 51 Algorithms

Selection Sort

Repeatedly selecting the minimum from the unsorted part.

How it works

Each pass finds the minimum of the unsorted portion and swaps it into place. It always does O(n²) comparisons but only O(n) swaps.

Where it is used

When writes are expensive, such as flash memory.

Common pitfall

Not stable by default, and no best-case speedup on sorted input.

Where it fits in the course

Selection Sort is topic 9 of 51 in Algorithms, rated Beginner. It follows Bubble Sort. The next topic is Insertion Sort.
