Beginner Topic 11 of 51 Algorithms

Merge Sort

Divide-and-conquer sort that splits and merges halves.

How it works

Split the array in half, recursively sort each half, then merge two sorted halves in linear time. Always O(n log n), stable, but needs O(n) extra space.

Where it is used

External sorting of huge files, sorting linked lists, stable sorts.

Common pitfall

Memory overhead; for arrays in memory quicksort is often faster in practice.

Where it fits in the course

Merge Sort is topic 11 of 51 in Algorithms, rated Beginner. It follows Insertion Sort. The next topic is Quick Sort.

How to study this topic

  1. Read the explanation above and restate the definition in your own words.
  2. Open the interactive lesson and answer its mini quiz.
  3. Read the common pitfall, then write a short example that avoids it.
  4. Check your understanding in the Algorithms quiz, and revisit the topic if you miss a question.
