Beginner Topic 3 of 51 Computer Architecture & Logic
Two's Complement
Standard encoding of signed integers in binary.
How it works
To negate a number, invert all bits and add 1. The top bit has negative weight, so n bits cover −2^(n−1) to 2^(n−1)−1 and addition works identically for signed and unsigned values.
Where it is used
Representing signed integers in virtually all CPUs.
Common pitfall
Overflow wraps silently: 127 + 1 in 8 bits becomes −128.
Where it fits in the course
Two's Complement is topic 3 of 51 in Computer Architecture & Logic, rated Beginner. It follows Hexadecimal and Octal. The next topic is Floating Point Representation.
