Advanced Topic 44 of 51 Computer Architecture & Logic
Storage Devices
HDDs and SSDs and how they persist data.
How it works
HDDs use spinning platters and moving heads (ms latency); SSDs use flash cells with no moving parts (tens of µs). Flash wears out after limited write cycles, so controllers do wear leveling.
Where it is used
Persistent data storage.
Common pitfall
Random vs sequential performance differs hugely, especially on HDDs.
Where it fits in the course
Storage Devices is topic 44 of 51 in Computer Architecture & Logic, rated Advanced. It follows Bus Architecture. The next topic is RAID.
