Intermediate Topic 18 of 51 Security & Cryptography

SHA Family

Standard cryptographic hash algorithms.

How it works

SHA-2 (SHA-256, SHA-512) is widely used and SHA-3 (Keccak) provides a different sponge construction. Length-extension attacks affect naive SHA-2 MACs, so use HMAC.

Where it is used

Git, Bitcoin, TLS.

Common pitfall

Never use plain SHA for passwords.

Where it fits in the course

SHA Family is topic 18 of 51 in Security & Cryptography, rated Intermediate. It follows Hash Functions. The next topic is Digital Signatures.
