Intermediate Topic 23 of 51 Theory & Discrete Math

Pumping Lemma for Regular Languages

Tool proving certain languages are not regular.

How it works

For a regular language there is a length p so any string of length ≥ p can be split xyz with |xy| ≤ p, |y| ≥ 1 and xy^i z in the language for all i. Use it by contradiction to show non-regularity.

Where it is used

Proving {0^n 1^n} is not regular.

Common pitfall

It can only prove non-regularity, never regularity.

Where it fits in the course

Pumping Lemma for Regular Languages is topic 23 of 51 in Theory & Discrete Math, rated Intermediate. It follows Regular Expressions in Theory. The next topic is Context-Free Grammars.
