Beginner Topic 17 of 54 Programming Fundamentals

Debugging Basics

Systematically locating and fixing faults using prints, breakpoints and reasoning.

How it works

Debugging is a loop: reproduce the failure, form a hypothesis, inspect state (prints, logs, a debugger with breakpoints), and confirm the fix. Binary-search the code by checking midpoints.

Where it is used

Finding why a loop skips an element or why a value is null.

Common pitfall

Changing many things at once hides the cause. Make one change per experiment and write a test for the bug.

Where it fits in the course

Debugging Basics is topic 17 of 54 in Programming Fundamentals, rated Beginner. It follows Comments and Documentation. The next topic is Arrays and Lists.
