Intermediate Topic 26 of 51 Computer Architecture & Logic

Cache Memory

Small fast memory holding recently used data close to the CPU.

How it works

A cache keeps recently used blocks (cache lines, often 64 bytes) in fast SRAM. A hit returns data in a few cycles; a miss fetches from the next level. Average access time = hit time + miss rate × penalty.

Where it is used

L1/L2/L3 caches in CPUs.

Common pitfall

Poor locality causes thrashing; row-major vs column-major order matters in 2D arrays.

Where it fits in the course

Cache Memory is topic 26 of 51 in Computer Architecture & Logic, rated Intermediate. It follows Memory Hierarchy. The next topic is Cache Mapping.
