Intermediate Topic 23 of 52 Data Structures
Binary Heap Operations
Sift-up and sift-down procedures maintaining the heap invariant.
How it works
Insert appends at the end then sifts up; extract-min swaps the root with the last element, removes it and sifts down. Both are O(log n). Building a heap from n items takes O(n) via heapify.
Where it is used
Priority queue internals.
Common pitfall
Off-by-one in child index formulas and forgetting to restore order after replacing the root.
Where it fits in the course
Binary Heap Operations is topic 23 of 52 in Data Structures, rated Intermediate. It follows Heaps. The next topic is Tries.
