Advanced Topic 41 of 51 Security & Cryptography

ASLR and Stack Canaries

Mitigations randomizing layout and detecting stack corruption.

How it works

ASLR randomizes memory layout so addresses are unpredictable; stack canaries place a secret value before return addresses and abort if corrupted. Together with NX they raise exploit cost.

Where it is used

Default OS and compiler mitigations.

Common pitfall

Not bulletproof; leaks and brute force can bypass them.

Where it fits in the course

ASLR and Stack Canaries is topic 41 of 51 in Security & Cryptography, rated Advanced. It follows Return-Oriented Programming. The next topic is Sandboxing.
