Amortized Analysis

Averaging cost over a sequence of operations.

How it works

Amortized analysis averages the cost over a worst-case sequence of operations, using the aggregate, accounting or potential method. Dynamic array appends cost O(1) amortized though some copy everything.

Where it is used

Dynamic arrays, splay trees, union-find.

Common pitfall

Amortized is not the same as average-case; an individual operation can still be expensive.

Where it fits in the course

Amortized Analysis is topic 48 of 51 in Algorithms, rated Advanced. It follows Approximation Algorithms. The next topic is Convex Hull.
